Jeremiah 23:23-24,29 “Am I a God at hand, saith the LORD, and not a God afar off? Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the LORD. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the LORD. . . . Is not my word like as a fire? saith the LORD; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces?”
Sometimes questions can be quite instructive. Do you know someone who will answer your question with a question? For instance, if you say, “How are you?” they answer, “How are you?” If you ask, “What are you doing?” they might reply, “Why are you asking?” Someone’s answer can be very telling!
God’s questions in Jeremiah 23 teach us more than man’s answers. For the sake of time, we’ll just look at three questions this morning. The first question is found in verse 23: “Am I a God at hand, saith the LORD, and not a God afar off?” Is God a God at hand? That is, is God here now? The answer is “yes.” He is also a God afar off, which means He is “here,” no matter where “here” is! He is not a provincial God that is limited to one geographical area. His truth is true here, there, and everywhere!
We find a second question in verse 24: “Can any hid himself in secret places that I shall not see him? . . Do not I fill heaven and earth?” Can anyone hide from God? No-He is everywhere. You cannot escape God’s care, scrutiny, or power. You can’t escape God.
The final question we’ll see this morning is in verse 29: “Is not my word like as a fire? saith the LORD; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces?” God has given us everything we need for life and godliness in His Word, but you will actually have to read it and know what He has said. God’s Word can warm cold hearts and break hearts of stone. The prophets in Jeremiah’s day were of no profit to the people because they substituted God’s eternal truth for their own thoughts. They had the material that could have helped people but did not use it. God’s power and His Word are not diminished today-rely upon His Word and use It.
