Acts 1:8 “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”

The Job of a Witness

All three of my kids ask very hard questions. Do you have kids like that? A five-year-old can ask a question that no Ph.D. can answer! Jesus’ disciples asked a hard question in Acts 1: “Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?” The Lord Jesus gave a better and different answer than the question He was asked.

God has clearly told us everything we need to know in order to do what we should do. The disciples had questions about the end times, like most of us do. Recently, a man tried to set the date when the Lord would come back. Obviously he was wrong because we are still here! The Lord Jesus told His disciples, “It is not for you to know. . . .” It is liberating to know that you don’t have to know everything!

The Lord’s promise was that “ye shall receive power . . . and ye shall be witnesses. . . .” A witness doesn’t have to know everything as long as he tells what he knows. That is what a witness does–he simply tells what he knows.

Today, there will be questions to which you do not have the answer. Don’t worry about what you don’t have; use what you do have and be faithful with what you have been given. You do not need the answer to every question as long as you have the power for every day. God uses obedient people, not smart people. God has given you His Word and His Spirit so that you can know everything you should know.
