Exodus 28:29 “And Aaron shall bear the names of the children of Israel in the breastplate of judgment upon his heart, when he goeth in unto the holy place, for a memorial before the LORD continually.”

If a priest were here today, wearing his priestly garments, do you think you could spot him? Of course! Why? Because of the way he was dressed. The priestly garments described in Exodus 28, and specifically the breastplate of judgment, are a reminder to us that who is on your shirt is who is in your heart. Do you think it was possible for a priest to go before the Lord and be distracted? Could he go before the Lord and not have the people on his heart? Why did God want the names on this breastplate anyway? Because the children of Israel were in God’s heart!

The people you may work with today are not more in your heart than they are in God’s heart. We ought to be concerned about people today like God was concerned about the children of Israel in Exodus 28.

We ought be mindful that we have an Advocate

, the Lord Jesus. The high priest was a picture of this in the Old Testament, but Jesus Christ the Advocate has you in His heart today.

We ought also be mindful to remember. Verse 29 says this breastplate with names on it was to be “a memorial before the LORD continually.” This was certainly not to help God’s memory-He already knows. He is God. So whose memory was it to help? Aaron’s! When Aaron wore the breastplate of judgment, he could not help but remember the reason for his ministry.

What is your priority today? Are you so busy serving God that you have forgotten why you are serving God? Is your day consumed by trivial and urgent, but unimportant, things? If Aaron would forget like we do, all he needed to do was take a look down at his chest. The reason for Aaron’s serving was literally on his chest!

The Bill Rice Ranch is people. That not only defines what the Ranch is, but describes everything we do-we serve people. And everything we do and everything you do is before the Lord and for the Lord. You will notice repetition of the phrase “before the Lord” in Exodus 28. Verse 30 says Aaron was to “bear the judgment of the children of Israel upon his heart before the LORD continually.” Verse 35: “And his sound shall be heard when he goeth in unto the holy place before the LORD. . . .” In verse 41 God tells Aaron and his sons they were to minister unto [Him] in the priest’s office.”

You serve people today because you are serving God, and your serving is before the Lord. What is grabbing your attention today? Most likely, it is something that is selfish or that won’t matter in five days. What is on your heart is important today. Better yet, who is on your heart is important today. May God help us to serve Him the same way Aaron and his sons served Him.
