Psalm 116:1 “I love the LORD, because he hath heard my voice and my supplications.”

This psalm has been an encouragement to me. The psalmist says, “I love the Lord,” and there is a reason-a cause-for him to love the Lord. We, too, should love the Lord for Who He is and what He has done. He is worthy of our trust and our calling upon Him.

In verse 1, the psalmist said, “I love the LORD, because he hath heard my voice and my supplications.” He knew of God’s goodness because when he called upon God before, God had heard him.

In verse 2, the psalmist gives one of the best reasons to love and trust the Lord: “Because he hath inclined his ear unto me, therefore will I call upon him as long as I live.” One of the best reasons to trust God today is His track record. God has provided, and we can see His record and His character in past provision. We ought to love Him, trust Him, and ask Him for the things we need.

I love how verse 12 summarizes his response to the Lord. He says, “What shall I render unto the LORD for all his benefits toward me?” You can’t buy God’s goodness because it is not of merit. God’s goodness is not deserved or earned. That is why the Bible calls it a “free gift.” That almost seems redundant, but we definitely need reminding that it is free and it is a gift!

Psalm 116 ought to change the way we look at today and the way we work today. Because of God’s wonderful goodness to me, I will keep asking, I will thank Him, and I will make good on what I said I will do. Do you love the Lord?
