Psalm 118:6 “The LORD is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me?”

Last time, we saw in verse 5 that the psalmist could testify of God’s mercy when he called out to God in distress. Life’s problems can sometimes feel “compressed” like the narrow roads in Pennsylvania and Maryland, but God gives us reason to say, “O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: because his mercy endureth for ever.”

We find a rhetorical question in verse 6: “The LORD is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me?” The question, “What can man do unto me?” doesn’t need an answer because the psalmist could say, “The Lord is on my side.” That kind of confidence does not come accidentally or incidentally!
God is on our side if we are on His side. The Lord is present–He is “at hand.” God is just as much here in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, as He is in whatever place you are reading this. To ask the question, “Is God on my side?” is really a question of, “Am I on God’s side?”

If I fear God, I can have confidence in today and do not need to fear everyone and everything else. The truth is, you will fear someone today. Either you will fear God or you will fear what men can do to you. Verses 8-9 encourage us that “It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man” and “in princes.” Whose side are you on?

You can spend your days putting your confidence in men and princes, but you will never know the peace and confidence the Bible talks about. However, if you will fear the Lord and know you are on His side, you can have great confidence and have reason to not fear today.

Psalm 118 ends the same way it begins: “O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: because his mercy endureth for ever.” You can know God’s goodness and enduring mercy today if you know that “the LORD is on my side.”
