Psalm 46:1 “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”

If you want to describe this Psalm in a nutshell, look no further than verse 1: “a very present help in trouble.” God is a present God; He is present in time and place. God is “very present.”

Don’t relegate God’s character to the past. Abraham is dead, but the God of Abraham is not dead. God is the God of the living.

God is not relegated to the past, and God’s power is not diminished. You may not have a physical attachment to Abraham, but if you are saved, you have a spiritual attachment through Abraham. God is no less able today than He was in the Old Testament times. He is “a very present help in trouble.”

So what does it take to make you fear? No matter what happens, God is a present God. You can know that “God is in the midst of her.” (verse 5) God is the “I AM,” not the “I was.”

I love how verses 7 and 11 put this truth: “The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.” The LORD of hosts is the General of His army, and He is a present God-He is “with us.”

From what is God your refuge? Maybe it is something physically seen, or maybe it is something that can’t be seen but can be felt. No matter what “it” is, you can rest today in the fact that God is a present God.
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
