Psalm 5:1-3 “Give ear to my words, O LORD, consider my meditation. Hearken unto the voice of my cry, my King, and my God: for unto thee will I pray. My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O LORD; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.”

The most important thing about praying is that God hears. Notice the words David uses in the first three verses of Psalm 5: “Give ear . . . hearken . . . my voice . . . hear. . . .” C.H. Spurgeon said that the object of prayer is God’s ears. That is true, and that is what we see in David’s prayer in Psalm 5.

It is also wonderful that God not only knows the words we pray, but He knows our thoughts as well. David said, “Consider my meditations.” Sometimes people can hear your words (as in a public prayer), but usually only God hears you. Whether or not people hear you, the most important thing about prayer is God’s ear.

Notice also in verse 3 that David says, “I will direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.” You can’t look up if you are on top of the pile! When you come to God and look up, that is the way it should be. A man that hasn’t figured out he is needy will not look up. But the first thing you should do when you get out of bed is “look up”!

Are confidence and humility opposites in your mind? Well, if by confidence we are talking about how great I am, then humility is nowhere to be found. That type of confidence is just begging to be crushed. But truthfully, confidence and humility are not mutually exclusive. True confidence comes from true humility, and the best way to demonstrate humility is to “look up” to the God of Heaven.
