Isaiah 36:4 “And Rabshakeh said unto them, Say ye now to Hezekiah, Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this wherein thou trustest?”

Don’t you just love sports interviews? Usually they are not exactly “rocket science,” but sometimes they are comical to listen to because of all the “trash talking.” The trash talking is not confined to sports stars; politicians who are campaigning can do a pretty good job, too! In the Bible, we find an interesting passage about a wicked Assyrian who talked trash, but his story is worth our consideration when it comes to the subject of trusting God.

The king of Assyria sent Rabshakeh and a huge army to Hezekiah. His initial question is a thought-provoking one for us to consider: “What confidence is this wherein thou trustest?” To summarize his trash talk, he mocked Israel’s trusting in Egypt (v. 6), in Jehovah God (v. 7), and in Hezekiah (v. 14). By extension, he was trying to get the people of Israel to trust Assyria!

The question is, what is the object of your dependence? What is your “confidence”? Trusting in the world (Egypt) is pointless and empty. Trusting in yourself is not any better. Trusting in Jehovah God, although mocked by the Assyrians, is the only legitimate choice. How sad that a wicked Assyrian could not see the difference between trusting the Lord and trusting Egypt!

You can trust in yourself, you can trust in the world, you can trust in someone else, or you can trust in God. Are you fully trusting God for everything you need today? Would the world see you trusting the Lord, or would they see you seeking confidence from another source?
