Luke 24:21 “But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done.”

Living Up to Expectations

Does the Lord always live up to your expectations?

Actually, the Lord never lives down to your expectations because they can never exceed who God is! He lives beyond our expectations. But what if God doesn’t do what you want or expect Him to do? Isn’t that a fair question we have all faced at some time?

Two disciples were walking on the road to Emmaus and trying to understand what the Lord had done. They unknowingly met the Lord Jesus in the way but did not realize who He was. When asked what they were talking about and why they were sad, they answered, “But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done.” They were disappointed because the Lord Jesus did not live up to their expectations; He was literally living beyond their expectations! They missed it, and so do we many times.

Our expectations of the Lord will never be greater than who He is. When it seems that the Lord hasn’t lived up to our expectations, it is usually a matter of time, context, or the bigger picture. So what are we to do? Go to the Word. The Lord directed the disciples’ attention back to “all that the prophets have spoken.” He started from the very beginning and “expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.”

I don’t know what your expectations are for the day, but your expectations are not better than who God is. See the Lord in your day and in His Word. Jesus Christ will never live down to your expectations; He will live beyond them!
