Lamentations 3:22-23 It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

God’s Mercy is as Fresh as Our Need

Some things are only good fresh. You’re almost never going to see the word ‘fish’ on a chalkboard outside a restaurant without the word ‘fresh’ before the fish. We think about fresh flowers. Flowers are beautiful, but they certainly don’t last forever. A wilted flower is worse than no flower at all. Or maybe the only thing your house needs is a coat of fresh paint. You know, paint is great, but paint when it’s faded and cracked is almost more an insult than a help. How good then to know that the mercy that God offers to you today is of the fresh variety.

Lamentation 3:22-23 says, “It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” Now you’re not faithful, but God is. You’re certainly not perfect, but God is. The kicker is that God is both perfect and merciful. The lovingkindness that God extended to His wayward people so long ago is the character of God that has not changed even today. The same God that gave mercy and help to His people thousands of years ago is just as new, available, and fresh to a modern person in a modern world this very moment.

The morning never dawns on God because God never sleeps. He sees the night as if it were day. There’s not a morning that dawns that can surprise or dismay God. Now it may be that today the sun is behind the clouds, and it may be that your life seems to be under a cloud. That may be true, but it’s not unusual.

Most of Lamentations 3 is a dark, dark picture. In fact, Jeremiah said in verse 2, “He hath led me, and brought me into darkness, but not into light.” He goes on to describe the judgment of a righteous God to an unfaithful, wicked people. It was even to the point that his hope had perished. Hope sprang alive when he recalled in his mind God’s mercy. Wherever you’ve been, wherever you are, and whatever the future you fear, please know that God’s mercy is as fresh as your need.
