Acts 5:12 And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people; (and they were all with one accord in Solomon’s porch.)

The Spirit of Unity

The book of Acts is a book of actions. Behind every action in Acts is a reason. One of the reasons for what God did is found in Acts 5:12 where it says, “By the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people; (and they were all with one accord in Solomon’s porch.)” Now this may not be what you consider a powerful verse, but even a verse like this carries extraordinary weight because of the other verses that stand upon its shoulders.

Right at the very start in Acts 1:14 the Bible says, “These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication.” In Acts 2:1 it says, “They were all with one accord in one place.” The word “accord” comes from two different words meaning “to rush along” and “in unison.” So the idea of being in one accord is “to rush along in unison.” The people we read of here were uniformly submitted to one Person with one message.

As the book of Acts unfolds, you find there were among the believers those who were rich and those who were poor, those who were Jews and those who were Gentiles, and those who were ladies and those who were gentlemen. But all of these had one mind and were of one accord. Again in Acts 4:32 it says, “And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul.” Now about what were these people of one heart, one mind, and one soul? It was the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Now the way to enjoy a spirit of unity is to be in submission to the Spirit of God. We should be just like a symphony that plays beautiful music. Every person has a different part to play, but is under the direction of and in submission to a conductor.

God is the One who has created diversity. He has gifted us in a variety of ways and given us a variety of strengths, but that is not what will make a difference. What will make a difference is when all of us from different places and with different strengths submit ourselves to Jesus Christ and allow His Spirit to have His way in our lives.
