Mark 15:3 And the chief priests accused him of many things: but he answered nothing.

The Issue is Jesus

Why was Jesus Christ crucified? Now we know that our sins put Jesus on the cross, and we know that His death, burial, and resurrection were all part of God divine plan. But as to those who judged Jesus that day, what was their reason for condemning Him?

Mark 14:57 speaks of the accusations of the false witnesses against Him, and then “the high priest stood up in the midst, and asked Jesus, saying, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee?” But the Bible says that Jesus “held his peace and answered nothing.” Jesus did not respond to the accusations.

But His silence was broken when again the high priest asked him, “Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed. And Jesus said, I am….And they all condemned him to be guilty of death.” He did answer this question because this was the issue in question.

Jesus will and could never be palatable to those who refuse, resent, or reject His authority and kingship. In short, Jesus is the issue, not something He demands, asks, or teaches. The issue is Jesus Himself. The rest of this chapter demonstrates this truth.

For instance, verse 26 says, “And the superscription of his accusation was written over, THE KING OF THE JEWS.” What was the accusation? Well, whether it is from a Roman or Jewish perspective, Jesus was crucified because of sinners’ rejection of His place, His kingship, His lordship, His authority.

Jesus’ rule is the real question, and not some law or set of rules. People reject Christ not because He demands this or teaches that, but because they would prefer to concede to rules than to yield completely to Jesus’ authority.

The issue is Jesus and whether He has authority in your life. If Jesus has complete authority in life, we will not quibble over what we should give, do, watch, hear, see, or say because the main question of the place Jesus Christ has in life has been settled.
