Ezekiel 12:2 Son of man, thou dwellest in the midst of a rebellious house, which have eyes to see, and see not; they have ears to hear, and hear not: for they are a rebellious house.

Those Who Will Not See

Isn’t it amazing how we hear what we want to hear and see what we want to see? I can be reading a book just before supper, and my wife might say, “Wil, could you please check on the trash?” Many times, I honestly don’t hear what she is saying. I am absorbed in my book. At the same time, the moment she says, “Everyone ready for supper?” somehow that registers, and instantly I am up on my feet.

If you have children, you have experienced the same thing. Many times our children hear only what they want to hear. There is a degree to which what we see and what we hear is a willful perception. To paraphrase the old proverb, “There is none so blind as those who will not see.”

Ezekiel 12:2 says, “Son of man, thou dwellest in the midst of a rebellious house, which have eyes to see, and see not; they have ears to hear, and hear not: for they are a rebellious house.” People often plead ignorance when they cannot claim innocence. God says to Ezekiel, “You are living in the middle of a house that has rebelled against Me, their God. They have ears, but they don’t hear, they have eyes but they don’t see.”

Ezekiel had given his entire life to declaring God’s message to God’s people, yet even the most religious among them, the priests, religious groups, and leaders of the country, just didn’t get it. In fact, there was a proverb going around about how long it had been since God’s prophecies had been fulfilled. The proverb said, “The days are prolonged, and every vision faileth.” God said, “You tell them for me, Ezekiel, that I am going to make this proverb to stop. There are not going to be any more empty visions or flattering words from your false prophets.”

Verse 25 says, “For I am the LORD: I will speak, and the word that I shall speak shall come to pass; it shall be no more prolonged: for in your days, O rebellious house, will I say the word, and perform it, saith the LORD God.” In other words, God said, “You are not going to have to wait anymore. What I have been telling you is going to happen, and it will happen in your day.”

In II Peter 3 it says that in the last days there will be scoffers who, speaking of the Lord’s return, are going to say, “Where is the promise of His coming?” II Peter 3:4-5 says, “For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. For this they willingly are ignorant of.” It goes on to speak of that which could be known, but is not known.

Today, you don’t need to be smarter or know more. You need to have a more willing heart because God will give you as much light as you are willing to accept.
