Luke 12:7 But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows

Three nights ago for some reason I can’t explain, I could not sleep. Whatever it was, I woke up at three o’clock in the morning and I could not get back to sleep. Usually that is not a problem I have. I think sleep is a gift, and thankfully I have that gift. I usually have no trouble sleeping in a trailer, in a tent, on the floor; all of which I have done hundreds of times, but a couple of nights ago, I could just not find sleep. Of course, the way that works is that the next morning when I need to wake up, I need to sleep and don’t want to get up. Thankfully, just outside my bedroom window is a bushy tree and in that tree is a bird that sings every morning. So, I couldn’t get up and she couldn’t be quiet, so that helped me to get up.

You know, God cares for that little bird and thankfully God cares for me. He cares for both because God cares for His creatures. They are known of God. In Luke 12:6 Jesus says, “Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God.” In the temple different animals would have been available for sacrifice. A sparrow would have been one of the least valuable in some ways, but Jesus said that even a sparrow sold for two farthings is not forgotten by God. God knows them. God cares for His creatures. They are known of God.

They are valued of God. Verse 7 says, “But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.” For some people that would be easier than for others, but it is not hyperbole or exaggeration; it is just an example of how much God knows. He knows the very hairs of your head. It continues, “Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.” So, God knows and values His creatures.

God feeds His creatures. Back to birds again, verse 24 says, “Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls?” God goes from lesser to greater. He says that if He cares for the birds, won’t He care for you who are more valuable? So, God cares for His creatures, and you are more than merely His creature.

You are more than merely His creation. By faith in Christ you are God’s child. In verse 29 Jesus says, “And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind.” So many times we are up one day and down the next. We are of doubtful mind. Jesus says, “For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things.” So, you have seeking wealth versus seeking the kingdom of God. You have the doubtful mind with which we are plagued versus the knowledge that characterizes God. You are more than God’s creation. You are God’s child; so give what is bothering you to God.

In verse 25 Jesus says, “And which of you with taking thought can add to his stature one cubit?” You can’t add one inch to your height nor one day to your life. If you can’t take care of the least things, how can you take care of the biggest things? Jesus goes on to say, “If ye then be not able to do that thing which is least, why take ye thought for the rest?” If God cares for birds, God cares for you. If you can’t change the smallest things by worry, you can’t change the biggest things by worry.

Today, are you resting as you want? Are you resting as you ought? Remember that God cares for His creatures. You are more than merely a creation; you are God’s child. Whatever bothers you, you can give it to God.
