Daniel 7:14 And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.

A Timeless Perspective Comes from an Eternal God

Nearly all of us have this fascination with “the next big thing.” Some people are interested in the next big technology. For others, “the next big thing” would be a social event. They are social butterflies who want to keep up with who is doing what. Others want to make sure that what they’re wearing is up to date. They want to be the first person to have the new shoes. Many of us are interested in the latest current events.

So what if someone could give you a high-definition, large screen, heads-up display of “the next big thing?” What if God could give you a birds-eye view of the next four world powers? This is what God did for Daniel in a vision. Daniel 7:4 describes the Babylonian empire. Then in subsequent verses it describes the Medo-Persian, the Greek, and the Roman Empires.

In verse 14, God’s son, the Messiah, came in a vision to Daniel. The Bible says of the Messiah, “And there was given him dominion, and glory, and the kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.” The kingdom of God’s Son is unlike that of any other. It includes all people of every nation and language, and they all shall serve Him. This everlasting kingdom will not pass away and will not be destroyed like those of the Babylonians, Medo-Persians, and the Romans.

Here’s the point: if we are forever consumed by what is “the next big thing,” then ironically our perspective will be anything but big. It will be narrow, confined by time and space, and by the limited things of history that we can actually perceive. Above it all is the great God, the Ancient of Days. He is not merely ancient: He’s timeless. God Almighty straddles the present with a foot in the ancient days and a foot in the future. A timeless perspective comes from focus on a great and eternal God.

I don’t know what the next “big thing” will be for you, but let’s recall that God is greater than time, not limited to the day, and not limited to the power, understanding, and resources of man. Let’s have perspective on our life by having a focus on the timeless God Who rules the universe, that which was and that which will be.
