Isaiah 12:3 Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation.

A Well That Never Runs Dry

Few things are more bitterly disappointing on a road trip than to follow billboards for 45 long miles towards promised ice cream only to find that the truck stop that promised it has gone bankrupt, and there is nothing there.

The only thing that could be more disappointing would be to ride a camel across a desert toward anticipated water, only to find that the water you had expected is nothing but a mirage or a polluted well.

That is what had happened with God’s people. They had trusted the polluted waters of human power. They trusted the dry and bankrupt sources that the world could provide, and they forgot the Living Spring they had in God Himself.

In Isaiah 12:2 there is a song that is also sung elsewhere in the Bible. It says, “Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation.” God is characterized as our strength, our song, and our salvation. “Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation.”

Our God is a well that never runs dry. He supplied for Moses. When God parted the Red Sea, protected Israel, and prevailed against Egypt, Moses and the children of Israel sang this same song to the Lord. So Isaiah’s song is the same as that sung by Moses when God gave deliverance centuries before.

Our God is a well that never runs dry, and He also supplied for the psalmist. In Psalm 118 the psalmist says, “O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: because his mercy endureth for ever.” Then there is a line that should sound familiar, “The LORD is my strength and song, and has become my salvation.”

God supplied for Moses. God supplied for the psalmist. In fact, in Isaiah 11:16 it says, “And there shall be an highway for the remnant of his people… like as it was to Israel in the day he came up out of the land of Egypt.” The same God Who delivered Israel before can deliver Israel again, and that same God can deliver you.

Because this is true, we should call upon God just as the concluding verses of this chapter maintain. We should declare His actions, make mention of His name, sing unto Him, cry out and shout of this great God. When you fear God you need fear nothing else. You find that both in Psalm 118 and in Isaiah 12. Why? Because our God is a well that never runs dry.
