Deuteronomy 4:7-8  “For what nation is there so great, who hath God so nigh unto them, as the LORD our God is in all things that we call upon him for? And what nation is there so great, that hath statutes and judgments so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day?”

In a 1988 vice-presidential debate, Senator Dan Quayle was heavily criticized and questioned about his young age and perceived ignorance and inexperience. In a move to demonstrate his ability by association, Senator Quayle compared his amount of experience to the late President John F. Kennedy. In a memorable exchange, his opponent-Senator Lloyd Bentsen-responded, “I served with Jack Kennedy. I knew Jack Kennedy. Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Senator, you’re no Jack Kennedy.”

Although Mr. Quayle was ridiculed, we too try to demonstrate our ability by association in places where we lack—and that is not always wrong. Look again at the end of verse 6: “Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.” Moses said they were great, but what made Israel great? They certainly had no great buildings (like pyramids) nor great kings. What began as the family of Abraham became a collection of families, and their greatness came by association-how near God was and how obedient they were.

We are great by association in the same way. Imagine having unprecedented access to the President of the United States-for one day being literally by his side the whole time. Hundreds, even thousands, of people would be working to make you safe and meet your every need. Secret Service, White House staff, Air Force One, and numerous other people would see to it that the President’s every need (and yours, too) and every detail was taken care of! The next day, try leaving the President’s side and see how much special treatment you receive! Your greatness would be directly related to the nearness of the President. How much greater is our provision from God Almighty; and our greatness is directly related to how near He is!

Not only was God near, but He also gave His righteous laws to His people. When the people rebelled, it was not against Moses but against God. Verse 6 commands, “Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding. . . .” Wisdom and understanding were available for those who would trust and obey. God has given us His righteous laws and commandments-the Bible. There is wisdom and understanding today-trust and obey!

Demonstrate your ability today by association. Recognize that God is near and His righteous laws are worth obeying!
