Jeremiah 2:25b “But thou saidst, There is no hope: no; for I have loved strangers, and after them will I go.”

Have you ever known someone who did not like to hear good news? On one hand, you find people who like problem-solving and getting things done; on the other hand, you find people who seem to just enjoy the drama without actually resolving anything. It seems like some people just want to have problems!

Israel had gone their own way, and Jeremiah 2:25 highlights their attitude: “There is no hope: no . . . after them will I go.” Later on in Jeremiah, you find nearly the same words again: “And they said, There is no hope: but we will walk after our own devices, and we will every one do the imagination of his evil heart.” They were crying because there was no hope, yet they did not want any hope.

We can learn that the only person beyond hope is the one who rejects help. There is always hope with the Lord when you accept His help. Israel lamented that there was no hope, but they refused to follow God and His way. What they received from “doing their own thing” was hopeless, empty, stagnant, and stale. They left the “fountain of living waters” for “broken cisterns, that can hold no water.” (verse 13)

You cannot expect the hope that God gives if you reject the help He gives. God’s grace and help can extend to the lowest beggar and to the highest king. The only way to have God’s hope is to accept God’s help.
