Deuteronomy 2:24 “Rise ye up, take your journey, and pass over the river Arnon: behold, I have given into thine hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land: begin to possess it, and contend with him in battle.”

Defeating Giants

As a child, didn’t you enjoy hearing a good story? Maybe you liked a bedtime story or a story about the old days from a grandparent. My great-grandmother, who was a farmer’s wife in South Dakota, used to tell me stories about the natives of the land, gypsies, tumbleweeds, and farming. I still remember that!

The truth is, whether we know it or not, we all tell ourselves stories every day. We tell stories about who we are, what we can do, what we should not do, what has been, and what will be in the days ahead. Take care as to the kind of stories you tell yourself. The story you tell yourself about the past will, in large measure, determine the story you will live out today.

As Israel prepared to enter the Promised Land and stood on the cusp of great danger but great promise, Moses told them a couple of stories about what had been, precisely because of what was about to be. The land was full of giants (verses 9-23), but God had already given it into Israel’s hands. Sure, there were giants, but God was greater than the giants!

There is no stronghold too strong for people who rely upon God’s strength to possess their inheritance. There is no giant on the path of God’s will that is undefeated. You may see a giant you have never faced before, but there is no giant that has not been faced and defeated before by the power of God. The question is not, “Is this an easy path?” The only question is, “Am I following God?”

If you are, there is not a giant ahead that hasn’t been defeated before. You can’t always choose your giants, but you choose victory when you choose to follow God. Tell yourself that story today!
