Exodus 13:14“And it shall be when thy son asketh thee in time to come, saying, What is this? that thou shalt say unto him, By strength of hand, the LORD brought us out from Egypt, from the house of bondage.”

Like elephants, kids never forget. They always seem to remember your promising them ice cream or your most embarrassing moments. Like adults, kids do not remember. If they have not seen or ever heard, they will not have an awareness of God’s presence in their life. That is the purpose of a memorial-it helps your memory.

Your kids will only remember what you remind them of. And you ought show them God’s hand in your family history. Exodus 13:3-16 is about a memorial for the Israelites to remember and to teach their kids about what the Lord had done in their past. Verse 8 says that parents were to purposefully teach their kids that “this is done because of that which the LORD did unto me when I came forth out of Egypt.” How many people came out of Egypt? Was it not thousands? Then why were they to say “unto me when I. . .”? Dads and moms were to teach their kids what the Lord had done for them personally. The same is true for you: Your kids should see God’s working-not just in a corporate, generic sense-but in a personal way in your family.

I come from a family of storytellers. Both sides of my parents’ families were good at telling stories about our family’s past. It is easy now to look back one hundred years through the stories that have been passed down. But what if you are the first one to know God in your family? That does not change the need to teach God’s hand in your family history! Just like the children of Israel, you can teach your family what you were, what you are now, and that God is the reason why it is so.

Parents, it is up to us to keep alive (illustrate) God’s working to our children. Answers to prayer and God’s leading in our life are two great areas to remember. It takes real work to let kids know when an answer comes to what we have been praying for. Often we can pass right over the fact that God has worked in our life and in our family. If answers come, but we do not teach our kids, they will never know.

Make a good memory a goal in your family. Take the responsibility personally and see to it that your kids see and know God’s working.
