Exceeding Great & Precious Promises

II Corinthians 1:20  “For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.”

Unfortunately, politicians are known for saying just what people want to hear. It is very rare these days for a man running for office to have the same stand on everything, no matter who his audience is. I recently heard of a politician running for the Presidency who is in no way a “southerner” but suddenly had a southern accent when speaking to a group in Alabama! Thus we have now started using the term “flip-flop” to refer to a politician’s changing of position or throwing out empty promises. In this verse, Paul is proclaiming the truth that God ALWAYS keeps His promises; He does not “flip-flop,” if you will.

In verse 19, Paul points to “the Son of God, Jesus Christ” who “was not yea and nay, but in him was yea.” While on earth, and still today, Jesus does not change His stance, His word, His promise. Then in verse 20, this truth is taken further. All of God’s promises are “Yes” in Jesus Christ; He makes the promises sure. Not only that, but in Jesus the promises are “Amen” by us to the glory of God. We are the vehicles through which God’s promises are fulfilled.

One needs only to look at the Person of Jesus Christ to see that God’s promises are always kept. Think of all of the promises leading up to the day of Christ’s birth that were fulfilled on that day. Think of all the promises kept through the earthly life and death of the Savior. As His record shows, God will continue to keep His promises to us found throughout the Scriptures.

II Peter 3:9 says, “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” God will keep His promise of salvation to those that believe on Him; as Romans 8:32 says, “He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?” God will keep the promise of His return, though we have not seen it yet. He will come again because His Word is sure.

Verses 21-22 of II Corinthians 1 remind us of some of the promises given by our God—promises to establish, anoint, and seal (make our salvation secure) us by the Spirit. These are only a few of the many promises made to us by our God. Be reassured that God always keeps His promises! The timing of their fulfillment in our lives is not always the timing we would choose—but His timing is perfect. He knows exactly what we need and when we need it. God always keeps His promises!
