Psalm 2:4 He that sitteth in the heavens, shall laugh: the LORD shall have them in derision.

Children often takes their cues from their dad or mom. Oftentimes, if a young person is in a stressful situation, they will look at their dad or mom to see if their fears are validated or if mom and dad feel as if things are under control. As a parent I realize that many times dad or mom may look like they are under control in order to calm the fears of their children, but are not sure of the outcome of the situation themselves.
In any event, in Psalm 2 you find three groups of people and you find that God is not worried. When we look at God, He is not a God Who is worried about what is going on right now. It is not to say that God is indifferent or that He does not care. It is to say that when you look to God, God is not wringing His hands.
In verse 1 you find the heathen. That may sounds like a really simplistic term to modern ears, but the Bible is talking about those who reject God, in fact, those who rage against God. Psalm 2:1-2 says, “Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed.” That is very much the way it seems today, that the people of power are conspiring, not just against good, but against God from whom all good flows. They seem to want to control everyone else, yet they do not want to be controlled by God or bow to His control. So, they rage; they conspire; they say, “Let us cast God’s cords away from us. Let us be free.” There’s a lot of emotion here. They are emotionally worked up. There is rage here.
There is a great contrast to this in verse 4, and that is God. The Bible calls Him “He that sitteth in the heavens.” He is beyond their power to rule Him or to cast off His rule of the universe. “He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the LORD shall have them in derision.” The Bible is showing God’s response. On the one hand, you have the heathen who are just invested with hatred and rage, and on the other hand, you have God Who just laughs. He has them in derision. That is to say that He is not worried about them. Again, He is not indifferent or uncaring about this universe or any one person in this universe; it is that He is not worried about it.
Now, I think you can perhaps find more divisions than three in Psalm 2. I think we read about the Lord Jesus in Psalm 2, but I think you also find what the Bible calls “the blessed.” The last part of verse 12 says, “Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.” So, what do the heathen do? They rage. What does God do? He laughs. What do the blessed do? They rest. They trust in the Lord.
The bottom line is that when you are in tumultuous times and everything that should be stable seems to be moving, whether it is government, things at church, or things at your home, when you look to Heaven to see what God is doing about such things, you will be reminded that God is not worried. God cares about you; God knows about you; God is not indifferent. It is not as if God does not know what is going on, but like a child that looks to a parent to depend the stability, strength, and serenity there, you can look to God today and know with all your heart that despite what happens, God is not worried and you need not be.
