Psalm 89:6 For who in the heaven can be compared unto the LORD? Who among the sons of the mighty can be likened unto the LORD?

God Will Be Who He Has Been

The most virtuous person you know is very limited. The most faithful, loving, dedicated, and determined person will fail, if at no other time, on the day that he dies. His virtue on this earth cannot extend beyond his life. In contrast, God is not human. God is One God of incredible integrity, incredible ability, and fathomless faithfulness.

Psalm 89:1 says, “I will sing of the mercies of the LORD for ever: with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations.” God is a merciful God. His mercy extends beyond the generations. God is not limited by a finite span of time. God will be Who God has been. God is Who He is. “I am that I am.” So says God.

It is not just that God has virtues. God is absolutely virtuous and eternally so. For instance, take mercy. It is not just that God is merciful. He is faithfully merciful. “I will sing of the mercies of the LORD for ever: with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations.”

God is a God of wonders. Verse 5 says, “And the heavens shall praise thy wonders, O LORD: thy faithfulness also.” So God is not just a God of wonders; He is a God who is faithfully wondrous.

We think about His strength. Verse 8 says, “O LORD God of hosts.” That is a designation of a general with a great and mighty army. God commands an innumerable host. Verse 8 continues, “Who is a strong LORD like unto thee? or to thy faithfulness round about thee?” It is not just that God is strong; He is faithfully so. It is not just that God is loving; He is faithfully so.

Verse 24 says, “By my faithfulness and my mercy shall be with him.” Verse 33 says, “Nevertheless my lovingkindness will I not utterly take from him, nor suffer my faithfulness to fail.” That is why God won’t break His covenant. God’s faithfulness never fails nor runs out with time.

Here’s the deal: God will be Who God has been. Whatever you need today, God is the same God that ever was. You may need mercy, strength, love. These are things that are limited in people, but they are not limited in God. This is something we need to remember. We have a short view, but God does not. God is Who He is, and God will be Who God has been.
