Psalm 111:2 “The works of the LORD are great, sought out of all them that have pleasure therein.”

As a kid, did you enjoy school, or at least one particular subject? Chances are, if you enjoy science, you probably did well in science class. If you enjoy history, you probably did well in history. Throughout life, what you will enjoy is closely connected to your understanding. In other words, you are going to see or understand what you want to see or understand. The Bible says, “The works of the LORD are great, sought out [studied] of all them that have pleasure therein.”

Last year during a retreat at the Ranch, I met a friend who is somewhat of an amateur geologist. He was showing me all the wonderful kinds of rocks we have on the Bill Rice Ranch. He saw rocks because he enjoys rocks–he saw what he was looking for. But if you are not a geologist, you would probably come to the Ranch and say, “Man! There are a lot of rocks around here. You can’t plant anything here, can you?”

Every day, you are surrounded by God’s works. I love to go camping, but it would be boring to go camping with an athiest; there would be nothing to see! Now, God’s works and creation are still there, but he does not have “eyes” to perceive what is there. On the other hand, I love backpacking with people who see God’s works, whether we’re hiking through Desolation Wilderness or the Grand Canyon.

As grand as His creation is, the greatest works of God are not the works you see in your surroundings; God’s greatest works are the works He does in human hearts. The Bible tells us that “the works of the LORD are great,” so take notice. You will see what you find pleasure in today.
