I Chronicles 5:20 And they were helped against them, and the Hagarites were delivered into their hand, and all that were with them: for they cried to God in the battle, and he was intreated of them; because they put their trust in him.

High Points

Recently I was with my wife and daughter in Washington D.C. It is a marvelous and amazing city. It is full of current events and national history. When you look at the monuments and figures that made this country what it is, you are swept up with the tide of history and the stories that have become the story of a nation. When you look at national stories and monuments, you tend to want to remember the high points. Very often they are moments of victory.

When you look at your own history, whether national history, family history, or church history, you want to recall the things that were high points of success. Yet, the high points of your history are the times when God stooped down to hear.

For instance, in the book of Chronicles, the first several chapters are nothing but genealogies. On the rare occasion when the genealogies break, you find a brief story like you find in I Chronicles 5:20 where it says of the people of Gad, who were making war, “And they were helped against them, and the Hagarities were delivered into their hand… for they cried to God in the battle, and he was intreated of them; because they put their trust in him.” This is not a high point because they won a great victory, but because in their need they cried to God and He condescended to hear them. The high points of your history are the times when God stooped down to hear.

In Psalm 113:4-6 it says, “The LORD is high above all nations, and his glory above the heavens. Who is like unto the LORD our God, who dwelleth on high, who humbleth himself to behold the things that are in heaven, and in the earth!” God is so high and exalted that He must stoop and humble Himself to even view all the things in the heavens, let alone the earth.

You may not be on a mountaintop today, and that’s okay because you may be living through a day that in retrospect will be one of the high points of your life. God gains no glory when we have no problems and can handle all of our difficulties. God gains glory when He must stoop down to hear people as low as we are, calling to a God as high as He is, and shows Himself strong on our behalf.

Wherever you are today, remember that there is a God Who is high above. He hears, answers, and wants to show Himself strong on your behalf.
