Galatians 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female; for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

Identity in Christ

Who are you? That is a fundamental question that you need to have clear in your own mind. You can’t tell others who you are if you don’t know yourself. There is a lot of confusion today about identity, about who God has made us. A number of factors make up a person’s identity. For instance, I am an American male who is a Baptist preacher. All those things are significant and have their place of importance, but as a child of God the most important aspect of your identity is who you are in Christ.

Galatians 3:26 says it this way, “For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.”

The point here is that the most important aspect of your identity is who you are in Jesus Christ. Verse 29 tells us that we are “heirs according to the promise” of Abraham that was fulfilled in Jesus Christ. My primary identifier is not my ethnicity or my nationality, but who I am in Jesus Christ.

All people who are in Christ are blessed. Verse 8 says, “And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.”

All people are in need of Christ. Verse 22 says, “But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.” You can’t make good decisions in your life if your motivation is dominated by your secondary identity. If you are a Republican, American, or something else first and a child of God second then you are going to make decisions that you shouldn’t make. These identifiers are not insignificant, but none of them should be in authority over your identity in Christ. Your identity in Christ forms your motivation and your worth. I am not going to Heaven because I’m American, male, Baptist, or a preacher, but because I have put my faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ. In Christ I am an heir of God.
