Mark 14:32 And they came to a place which was named Gethsemane: and he saith to his disciples, Sit ye here, while I shall pray.

Jesus Knows Prayer

When I read the stories of Jesus in the Bible, I’m amazed by Who He is and what He has done. But sometimes I am more amazed by the things that Jesus did that I also do, than I am by the things Jesus did that I cannot do. Prayer is an example of this. It is hard for me to comprehend that the Son of God should pray, but He did. Whatever the theological reasons may be behind this, a practical result is that Jesus is a wonderful example for those of us who pray.

Mark 14:32 says, “And they came to a place which was named Gethsemane: and he saith to his disciples, Sit ye here, while I pray.” The Bible goes on to describe Jesus’ frame of mind while He prayed. He was deeply distressed. He told His disciples that His soul was “exceedingly sorrowful unto death.”

The thing that strikes me is the contrast between Jesus’ frame of mind and that of the disciples’. Jesus was literally agonizing in prayer, and His disciples were sleeping. Talk about a disconnect!

These disciples who were totally oblivious while Jesus prayed would later be in great jeopardy themselves. And you can be sure when they prayed, Jesus did not sleep. He was not indifferent because He cares. He hears prayer because He is God the Son. He understands prayer because He is the Son of Man. Jesus knows what it is to pray.

While other may not understand the burden behind our prayers, the Lord Jesus is always aware of that burden. He understands, He cares, and He is sufficient!
