Job 12:1-2 “And Job answered and said, No doubt but ye are the people, and wisdom shall die with you.”

Let’s imagine that we are doing some hiking and mountain climbing out West. As we approach the massive elevation change before us (a nearly vertical pitch), I offer to take the lead and climb first. Before climbing much further, I reach down almost directly below me to pull you up. As we lock hands, I place my feet on top of your shoulders, so that I am pulling you with my hands yet pushing with my feet. Instead of a firm foundation on terra firma, I am using your shoulders to stabilize myself!

In our little imaginary story this morning, how much progress are we likely to make? Not much! Our story illustrates the truth that you cannot put someone down and pull someone up at the same time. It’s impossible to do, whether you are mountain climbing at Yosemite or dealing with people. Job had friends who tried to pull him up while they were putting him down.

How can we pull people up and not put them down? First of all, listen. Sometimes wisdom is best expressed without a word. The best thing to say may be nothing at all! Second of all, look. Look at yourself! Job said, “But I have understanding as well as you; I am not inferior to you. . . .” Don’t look down on people who need help without realizing that areas you need help in. Third of all, give. Give them the truth of God’s Word. Give the truth from a heart that wants to help in a meek and humble spirit. Ultimately, I am not helping anyone if I don’t give them the truth!

How do you help people who are struggling? Well, you certainly don’t help them up by putting them down! When helping people, we need a helpful spirit and a willingness to listen, look, and give. Complement the truth of God’s Word by listening to others and looking at yourself. We may not go mountain climbing today, but I hope we can help people who need to be pulled up today!
