Ruth 2:10-11 “Then she fell on her face, and bowed herself to the ground, and said unto him, Why have I found grace in thine eyes, that thou shouldest take knowledge of me, seeing I am a stranger? And Boaz answered and said unto her, It hath fully been shewed me, all that thou hast done unto thy mother in law since the death of thine husband: and how thou hast left thy father and thy mother, and the land of thy nativity, and art come unto a people which thou knewest not heretofore.”

I recently read about a man and his daughter who found a bottle on a beach in North Carolina that the surf had washed up on shore. Inside the bottle was a message with directions to contact a fire department in the Northeast when the bottle was found. The message was written in 1969-this message in a bottle had been traveling for nearly forty years!

The bottle washed up on shore because anything that you throw out into the ocean will come back since the surf is stronger than your arm. The same is true in life. What you “throw out” will come back to you. Here in Ruth 2, Boaz is surprised that Ruth is surprised about his kindness. The Book of Ruth is filled with good people doing good things. There are no bloody battles, struggles with sin, etc. The story of Ruth is a touching one with characters who are nice people. It is a well-known and well-loved story. Ruth’s kindness to her mother-in-law and others had “fully been shewed [Boaz].” She was being repaid presently for her kindness in the past.

The Book of Ruth illustrates the Bible truth that what you “throw out” in life will come back to you.

Its return to you may be slow, but it is sure. What is “washing up” on your shoreline? Does it seem like the whole world is out to get you? Perhaps they are, and what you are casting out is returning to you. If you find impatience and unkindness on your shoreline, isn’t it reasonable to expect impatience and unkindness have been going out?

Stop and take stock of your life today. Are you disappointed with what you find on the shoreline? Begin by looking at what you are throwing out. On the other hand, a wonderful reminder for us is found in verse 12: “The LORD recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee of the LORD God of Israel, under whose wings thou art come to trust.” The Lord is the One who pays back, and He pays back in full. That is a truth that works both ways (postively and negatively). What an encouraging promise to know that your good and right actions will be repaid by the God of Heaven, even if men on earth do not repay.

It is sheer folly to think that your arm is stronger than God’s surf. What you throw out will wash up on your shore. Ruth should not have been surprised about Boaz’s kindness-she was simply finding the Lord repaying the kindness she was throwing out!
