Jeremiah 5:21 “Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not:”

Have you ever known someone who had no sense? No, not that kind of sense! Have you ever known someone who had lost their sense of hearing, smell, taste, touch, or sight? There are some things in life for which you need your five senses, but if you live life depending upon your senses, you will not have any sense!

Some issues and facts of life cannot be discerned by your senses. For instance, you cannot discern right and wrong by your senses. A classic response of someone living by their senses is, “I don’t see what is wrong with that!” or, “I don’t feel that it is wrong.” You cannot base right and wrong on how you feel, what you see, or how something sounds! Your five senses are not sufficient to let you know what is morally right and wrong.

My chocolate Labrador, Breck, can see, taste, hear, touch, and smell; but I would not trust her to discern what is best or right for me. Some Christians are no better than I would be if I trusted my dog!

Jeremiah 5 gives us a better way to live than living by our senses. The right way to live is with a “sixth sense” from God and His Word. A Spirit-filled heart that is guided by God’s Word is a greater “sense” than your sight, smelling, tasting, smelling, or touching. If your heart is not inclined to hear, you will not hear. If your heart is not inclined to see, you will not see. The only way to clearly see and hear is to have a right heart in tune with God!

Your greatest need this morning is to know God’s mind on any given matter you face. Sometimes that may mean not trusting your other senses. Like a pilot that flies by the plane’s instruments, not his own sight, may God help each of us to have the sense to live by His Spirit and His Word.
