Genesis 3:5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

The Answer to Any Accusation

The devil is the accuser of the brethren. He is not above talking about you behind your back, and that is something he does quite frequently. The devil is also the accuser to the brethren. He is the one who plants questions in the heart about God, and a devil who would accuse God to you would certainly accuse you to God. He does both; he plays both ends against the middle.

We find this tactic in Genesis 3 where the devil tempts Adam and Eve. Genesis 3:1 says, “Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?” That is a question, and a question can be a far more scathing indictment against someone than a proposition because a question invites other people to be involved.

Verses 4-5 say, “And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: for God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.” Satan is essentially saying, “God is holding out on you. God is not good or reliable.” The wonderful truth is that Jesus is the answer to any accusation the devil can make.

Someone may make the accusation that God is not good, gracious, or wise. Well, there is a one-word answer to that accusation, “Jesus.” On the other hand, the devil says about you and me to God, “Sinful, failure, wicked.” Still, the one-word answer to that is “Jesus.” Jesus has declared us righteous by His work on our behalf when we trusted in that work to save us.

In Genesis 3:15 God told the serpent, “And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; It shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.” There is coming a day when the devil will be completely vanquished. Jesus won the victory over the devil when He died on the cross for our sins. Jesus is the answer to any accusation the devil can make to you about God or to God about you. Jesus is the One who proves to us that God is good, and He is the One who has made us able to be declared righteous in the sight of a holy God.
