Luke 2:21 “And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb.”

The Names of Jesus

I love the name of the Lord Jesus in the Christmas story! When you really consider the Incarnation, you realize that God did not humble Himself to be born in a stable; He humbled Himself to be born at all. Here are some of the names of Jesus in Luke, chapters 1-2:

• Luke 1:32, 35b — “He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest…shall be called the Son of God.”
• Luke 2:11,12 — “…a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord…the babe… .”
• Luke 2:21 — “…his name was called JESUS…”
• Luke 2:26 — “…the Lord’s Christ…”
• Luke 2:27 — “…the child Jesus…”
• Luke 2:30 — “For mine eyes have seen thy salvation.”
• Luke 2:32 — “A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.”

Notice that He was “the babe” and the “child Jesus,” but He was (and is) also the “Son of the Highest,” “the Son of God,” and “Christ the Lord.” God’s gift of salvation is not something; it is Someone. His gift is not limited to one group, one race, or one civilization.

What was prophesied about hundreds of years before was fulfilled in a lowly cattle stall in Bethlehem. Saviour. Christ. Jesus. Child. How amazing that the Son of the Highest was born that glorious day!
