John 10:41 “And many resorted unto him, and said, John did no miracle: but all things that John spake of this man were true. And many believed on him there.”

Take just a minute to think of all the people in the New Testament who performed miracles. Could you think of a few? Of course, you probably listed Jesus, then perhaps Peter and Paul, and there are others as well. But there is one great man of the New Testament that could not be included in your list because he did not perform any miracles. This man, as we read in John 10:41, was John the Baptist.

What a legacy John left! By God’s grace, he was responsible for pointing many to the Savior. And yet he did not perform any amazing miracles like other great men in the New Testament did. Even the Lord Jesus Himself demonstrated His deity by doing many miracles, but many of the Jews responded to these works-not with belief, but with rage.

Look a few verses earlier where the Lord said, “If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not. But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him.” (verse 38) The next verse, John 10:39, says, “Therefore they sought again to take him: but he escaped out of their hand.” You see, those who reject the truth will not be convinced with miracles or amazing acts. As Jesus said, they do not have eyes to see what is so plainly set before them. On the other hand, those that have open eyes and hearts will be convinced by truth itself without the need of miracles.

The strength and power of John the Baptist’s life was found in truth and integrity, not in amazing miracles. His own testimony lays out the purpose of his life: “I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him.” (John 3:28) To put it concisely, “He must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:30) was the theme of his life. He lived his life centered on the fact of pointing people to the truth. And his life proved that nothing is more convincing than the truth.

I am afraid that many people end up living their lives for the approval of those around them. It is so easy to become someone who manipulates his way through life and only worries about what people think of him. John was different. He based his thoughts and actions on truth and integrity. That is what made his witness so powerful!

Yes, John did no miracle-not even one. Yet the Lord said that there was no greater man than John the Baptist. John pointed people to Christ; he spoke the truth; he lived the truth. Oh, to live as he did! Don’t be caught up with making a show of your life for the approval of others. Be single-minded like John and proclaim the truth. “He must increase, but I must decrease.”
