Deuteronomy 5:1 “And Moses called all Israel, and said unto them, Hear, O Israel, the statutes and judgments which I speak in your ears this day, that ye may learn them, and keep, and do them.”

Moses has just given the Israelites direct instructions from God, and now God tells them how He wants them to respond. Deuteronomy 5:1 sets forth the steps of response in a very clear progression: hear, learn, keep (or remember), and then do. Which of these steps do you think is most important? “Well,” you might say, “if you don’t learn what you are hearing, then it’ll do you no good.” True. Someone else may say that hearing is the most important because it’s the first step…you can’t really get to any of the other steps without the first one. That is also true.

You could actually make an argument for any of the steps in this progression. But what is the purpose for each step? The psalmist said, “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.”  The purpose for all of the other steps is the last step: “and do them.”

Hearing, learning, remembering–all of these are good, but none are ends in themselves. They are all for the purpose of preparing us for action.

What is the purpose of a watch? (Be careful, I’m setting you up!) Most of us would immediately respond, “To tell the time, right?” Wrong! Does a watch tell the time? Yes, it does. But its purpose is not just to tell you what time it is; its purpose is to help you to be on time! I have been in plenty of places where the clock on the wall is very large and prominent, but it does absolutely no good because no one ever pays attention to it!

When I am on vacation at the end of the summer, my watch suddenly becomes a useless item that I still strap to my arm. I might still look at it, for mere curiosity’s sake; but it’s really useless on vacation because I don’t need to be anywhere.

What good is the alarm clock by your bed if you keep hitting snooze in the morning? The purpose of every clock is to get you where you need to be on time. Just like a watch, the purpose of my hearing, learning, and remembering is that I will DO what I’ve been instructed to do.

Let’s look at other verses in this chapter that emphasize this truth: verse 27 says, “…we will hear it, and do it.” Verse 31 says, “I will speak unto thee all the commandments, and the statutes, and the judgments, which thou shalt teach them, that they may do them….” Verses 29 and 33 spell out the blessing that comes with active obedience: “That it might be well with them, and with their children for ever!” and “That it may be well with you, and that ye may prolong your days in the land which ye shall possess.”

Do you want God’s blessing on your life and on the lives of your children? Act on what you know! God is not primarily interested in what we know but in what we do. Which is worse? Doing wrong out of ignorance or doing wrong even after you’ve been told not to do it? Both are not good, but we would all agree that the second is worse.

Once I know what God’s instructions are, I need to jump into action because I now have greater responsibility. I am responsible for every step in this progression of obedience (hearing, learning, remembering, and doing). But never forget that the most important step is the last one-to do something with what we know. Remember that every time you look at your watch today!
