Isaiah 55:10-11 “For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.”
Over the last several months, and really the last couple of years, we have been experiencing a drought here in Tennessee. Likewise, it is not uncommon to hear of wild fires in the West because of the dry conditions. Drought makes people desperate for water. But did you know that there is more than one kind of drought? There is physical drought, and there is spiritual drought. Even worse, some people experience them both.
John R. Rice tells of a meeting he held once in Peacock, Texas. The folks there had struggled without rain for quite some time; even longer had they experienced a spiritual drought with no revival. John Rice encouraged the people to pray to God for rain, but it seemed like a sham to pray for water when they had neglected to ask God for revival in their own lives. When the dear folks at that church in Peacock got what they needed from Heaven-revival from the Lord-they asked for the rain their farms desperately needed. That week, in response to a bold but specific request, the Lord sent a great rain the folks of Peacock never forgot!
Here in Isaiah 55, we are reminded that the God of Heaven sends both rain and revival. His ways and thoughts are far above and different from ours (verses 8-9). The comparison in verses 10-11 is of water and the Word of God.
Truth comes from God.
We have become so complex and complicated and philosophical that we forget the only help we can give someone is God’s Word. So trust It and use It-It works! If you want to be a help, use God’s Word. Both water and the Word are used by God to bring forth fruit. That is what you see in verse 10: “For as the rain cometh down . . . and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give see to the sower, and bread to the eater.” Rain will give what the farmer needs. So it is with God’s Word; if you are a “sower”-a Sunday School teacher, a preacher, a layperson-the Word is the Seed you need to sow.
A new “buzz word” is relevant-“making God’s truth relevant for today.” Well, God’s Word is relevant-It always has been-and it needs to be applied specifically to people’s lives today. You don’t have to trick people into Bible truth-just give the “Seed”!
Not only does God use water and Word to give seed to the sower, He uses them to give bread to the eater. There are people you will help today that have needs that you cannot supply. None of us have what man needs, but God’s Word will be the “bread” to feed them! So trust God’s Word and use It!
The Word of God has a heavenly source and is used by God to bring forth fruit. You are not smart enough or wise enough (or whatever enough) to meet the needs of others today-but God’s Word has it. Trust It and use It.
“So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth. . . .”
