Nehemiah 9:32 “Now therefore, our God, the great, the mighty, and the terrible God, who keepest covenant and mercy. . . .”

Of all the people in this world, who loves you the most? Why do they love you? There may be a lot to love right now, but if the reason people love me is based on me, at some point that will all play out. In other words, if people love you because you are attractive, at some point you won’t look quite the same as you do now! If people love you because you are smart, you are in a tough spot when you find out there is something you don’t know.

In contrast, God loves you because of who He is, not because of who you are. That’s wonderful! If God loves me because of who I am, at some point everything lovable has an end. How futile to even think that anything I have is lovable to Almighty God! His love for you doesn’t change like physical looks or intelligence can.

Nehemiah 9 reminds us how unlovely Israel was and yet how loving and merciful God was. Verse 32 calls God “the great, the mighty, and the terrible God, who keepest covenant and mercy.” God keeps His people because God keeps His promise.Israel had turned from God over and over again, yet God gave them mercy. His mercy came because of who He is. God is a promise-keeping God. He keeps “covenant and mercy.”

God is righteous; therefore, He does not lie, say something He does not mean, say something He will not remember, nor promise something upon which He will not act. What that means for you and me is this: since God is a God who keeps His promise, He is a God who keeps me. When I trusted Christ’s payment for my sins, it was a done deal. God said, “Whosoever will may come,” and I did!

God loves me, not because of who I am, but because of who He is. Who you love says more about you than it does about the person. How wonderful, then, is the fact that God loves me! If you are a child of God, you have a special place in God’s heart. Share the good news of God’s love with someone who needs it today!
