Isaiah 28:29 This also cometh forth from the LORD of hosts, which is wonderful in counsel, and excellent in working.

Wonderful and Excellent

My grandpa was a South Dakota farmer as were his father and grandfather before him. Any farmer has learned a lot about the way God made this world. There is a time to plow, a time to plant, and a time to harvest. We can learn from the farmer that God provides the right thing in the right way at the right time. God knows what to give, when to give it, and just how to do it. Like a farmer cultivates his field, God cultivates His people.

Isaiah 28:24 talks about the work of a farmer, “Doth the plowman plow all day to sow? doth he open and break the clods of his ground?”  Well, does the plowman spend all his time plowing? The answer is no. That is not all he does.

Verse 25 says, “When he hath made plain the face thereof, doeth he not cast abroad the fitches, and scatter the cummin, and cast in the principle wheat and the appointed barley and the rie in their place?” This verse speaks of a time, a way, and a place.

The time is “when he hath made plain the face thereof.” There is a time to plow and a time to plant. He speaks of appointed barley. That is the right kind of seed. He talks about when he puts these seeds in their place. A farmer knows it is important when he plants, how he plants, what he plants, and where. The Bible tells us here that a farmer learns this discernment from God. Verse 26 says, “For his God doth instruct him to discretion, and doth teach him.”

The point here is found in verse 29 which says, “This also cometh forth from the LORD of hosts, which is wonderful in counsel, and excellent in working.” God knows what to provide, when to provide, and how to provide. At different times in my life I need rebuke, or comfort, or warning, or encouragement. God is mindful of each of us, and He knows what He is doing. God is wonderful in counsel and excellent in working.
